About Us

What is GREAT?

The Gambling Research, Education and Treatment (GREAT) Centre is a world-leading centre of excellence for research on gambling and gambling harms. The GREAT Centre conducts basic, applied, translational, and clinical treatment research to mitigate the impact of gambling-related harm for individuals, families, and communities. We co-create and disseminate our policy-led work with the support of those with lived experience of gambling harm and other stakeholders.

The GREAT Centre is a partner in a new initiative funded by UKRI to tackle and prevent gambling harms. The Gambling Harms Research UK (GHR-UK) Evidence Centre will work with government, health bodies, charities, people with lived experience of gambling and the wider research community to generate and apply independent, evidence‑led research to strengthen policy, practice, and public understanding across the UK.

The GREAT Centre is affiliated with the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH), an initiative which brings together world-leading researchers from Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor Universities to learn more about the triggers and causes of mental health problems.
